Why Raksha Bandhan is called Rakhi Purnima?

Just like other Indian festivals takes place on their respective auspicious days according to the Nakshatras, Raksha Bandhan also follows the same league. It falls on the full moon day in the month of Shravana (August month) which is considered very auspicious for indulging in religious celebrations. This is the reason why this festival is called as Rakhi Purnima as the word ‘Rakhi’ signifies Raksha Bandhan and ‘Purnima’ stands for full moon day. The day of Rakhi Purnima is divided into several parts which hold immense significance in terms of the performance of the rituals of Raksha Bandhan.

Aparahan Time on Rakhi Purnima

Aparahan Time is considered as the most auspicious time to indulge in the ritualistic celebrations of Raksha Bandhan. It is an ideal time to tie Rakhi on the wrists of the brother and offer prayers to God for his long life. As per the Hindu division of the day, Aparahan Time falls in the late afternoon.

Pardosh Time on Rakhi Purnima

This is another auspicious time in which Rakhi rituals can be performed on the day of Rakhi Purnima. The timings of Pardosh begin in the late evening and ends with the last timing of the Shubh Muhurat of Raksha Bandhan. As mentioned in the Hindu scriptures and holy books, this time is ideal in case people have missed on the Aparahan timings. This is the second best Muhurat to follow on the day of Raksha Bandhan.

Rakhi Purnima Tithi

This is the culmination of both the auspicious timings into one. This is the most ideal time to perform your Rakhi ceremony without any worries of inauspiciousness.

Bhadra Timings: Most Inauspiciousness time on Rakhi Purnima

This is the segment of Rakhi Purnima day which must be avoided to perform any kind of rituals for Raksha Bandhan. This time period gets over before sunrise.
